The Montes de Toledo are an east-west direction, depending on the map and the geographical perspective, up to 350 km long and on average 50 km wide mountain range southwest of the Spanish capital Madrid . The name Montes de Toledo is misleading insofar as the city of Toledo does not belong to the mountain range whose highest peak is the approximately 1602 m high Pico Villuercas in the Sierra de Guadalupe .

geography

The Montes de Toledo are a very old and heavily eroded mountain range that was not covered by Ice Age glaciers . They are divided into several smaller mountain ranges; the most important are:

  • Sierra de Guadalupe : the highest mountains are Pico Villuerca (1603 m), Cervales (1441 m), Carbonero (1428 m), Ballesteros (1342 m), Sobacorbas (1320 m) and Risco Redondo (1287 m).
  • Sierra de Altamira : the highest mountains are Riscos Altos (1324 m) and Risco de las Moras (1279 m).
  • Sierra de Montánchez : the highest mountains are Pico Montánchez (995 m), Cancho Blanco (955 m) and Alijares (786 m).
  • Sierra de San Pedro : the highest mountains are Torrico de San Pedro (702 m), Atalaya (624 m), Chorlo (624 m), Morrón del Cotarro (615 m) and Manzano (610 m).
  • Serra de São Mamede (Portugal): highest mountain is the Pico São Mamede (1025 m).

The Montes de Toledo are bounded to the north by the River Tajo and to the south by the Río Guadiana . The 95 km long Río Algodor and the approximately equally long Río Almonte (both tributaries of the Tagus) and the Río Amarguillo , which flows into the Río Cigüela and ultimately belongs to the river system of the Río Guadiana , arise in the mountains .

Others

The region is well known for its olive oil of the same name . It is home to a rare big cat, the Iberian lynx .
