The Almonte is a left tributary of the Tagus and is about 97 km long. It rises in the north of the Sierra de Guadalupe mountain range in the province of Cáceres . Its course always leads in a north-westerly or westerly direction through mostly uninhabited areas. About 6 km east of Garrovillas de Alconétar it finally flowed into the Tagus. Today the estuary sank in the Alcántara reservoir . The Roman bridge over the Almonte had already disappeared, the remains of the Puente de Alconétar over the Tajo were moved 6 km further north on a meadow on the river bank.
