The Alcántara Reservoir is a reservoir of the Tagus , the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula . It is located in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Extremadura near the Portuguese border, in the immediate vicinity of the town of Alcántara . The dam is officially called Embalse de José María de Oriol-Alcántara II and is named after a director of the former owner company Hidroeléctrica Española (now Iberdrola ).

The barrier structure was built in 1970 about 600 meters above the ancient Roman bridge of Alcántara . The gravity dam is 130 meters high and 570 meters long.

The reservoir holds 3.162 billion cubic meters and is 104 square kilometers in size. The hydropower plant has an output of 915 megawatts.
