The Valdecañas dam ( Spanish Embalse de Valdecañas ) dams the Río Tajo about halfway along its course in the east of the province of Cáceres in the Spanish region of Extremadura . It was completed in 1964 and is used for flow regulation and energy generation.

Dates and location

The approximately 315 m high reservoir has a maximum surface area of ​​7,300 km² and a maximum capacity of 1,446 million cubic meters and is surrounded by the mountains of the Montes de Toledo . The dam connects the municipalities ( municipios ) Belvís de Monroy and Valdecañas de Tajo .

Attractions

The ruins of the Roman city of Augustobriga were flooded when the dam was built; only the remains of a portico and three truncated columns were moved to a higher level.

There is also a megalithic structure in the reservoir, which is only accessible when the water level is extremely low.
