Nisha Ganatra

Nisha Ganatra (born June 25, 1974 in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada ) is a Canadian film director , actress and screenwriter .

Life

Nisha Ganatra was born in Canada but grew up in Los Angeles . She has Indian roots: her mother came from New Delhi and her father from Bombay . As a child, her interest in American films was aroused, especially love films and screwball comedies aroused her interest. She studied film directing at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University .

Her debut feature film, Chutney Popcorn, about lesbian lovers in New York, played by Jill Hennessy and herself who wants a child, was also her breakthrough. She reached 3rd place in the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale 2000 and won the audience awards at the Newport Film Festival , the Paris International Lesbian and Feminist Film Festival and the Madrid International Film Festival, as well as the Outfest Los Angeles film award, the San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festivals and Munich Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

In 2003 she released her second feature film, Cosmopolitan , which was shown at the South by Southwest Festival. It was also shown as the only narrative film at the International Public Television Screening Conference .

In addition to her movies, she also shot for television. So she shot some episodes of television series such as Mr. Robot , Shameless and Haven . She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and won a PGA Award for her work on the Amazon video series Transparent .

Private life

Nisha Ganatra is openly homosexual, which can also be seen in some of her films and series episodes, which often take up topics and motifs from the LBGT community.
