Spanish Levant

In Spain , the term Levante ( Spanish for the direction of the compass “east”, derived from sunrise , from levantarse , “to rise”) denotes the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula and its hinterland, especially the coastal landscapes of the former kingdoms of Valencia and Murcia . In Catalan , the varieties of which are spoken in large parts of the Spanish Levant, the name is Llevant . An area on the east coast of Mallorca is also called Levante / Llevant .
