Juan García Loaysa y Mendoza OP (* 1478 in Talavera de la Reina near Toledo; † April 22, 1546 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician, religious, bishop , archbishop , cardinal of the Catholic Church and general master of the Dominican Order .

Life

As the son of aristocratic parents, Pedro de Loaysa and Catalina de Mendoza, García entered the Monastery of San Esteban of the Dominican Order in Salamanca in November 1496 . After a period of weak health, he studied in the convent of Santo Tomás in Ávila and then went to Valladolid to the Colegio San Gregorio. There he became a lecturer and received the post of rector. In 1518 he was in Rome for the Superior General , elected the Dominican after 1516 already the Office of the Spanish Provincials had exercised. In 1522 he became confessor of Emperor Charles V. In June 1524 he was appointed Bishop of Osma . On August 4, 1524 he was appointed President of the Council of India and in 1526 appointed to the Council of State. In 1530 he was awarded the cardinal dignity with the titular church of Santa Susanna in Rome . In 1532 he became Bishop of Sigüenza and finally in 1539 Archbishop of Seville . At the same time, in the absence of King Charles, he was given the reign of the Spanish colonial empire in the New World. In 1546 he was appointed Grand Inquisitor for Spain.

In the same year he died in Madrid at the age of 68. His body was transferred to his hometown of Talavera de la Reina, where he was buried in the church of Santo Domingo y San Ginés of the Dominican monastery he had built. His tomb made of alabaster can still be seen there today.
