biography

Little is known of his life in Spain, neither the place of birth nor the year of his birth can be clearly determined, it is known that he received his musical training in Salamanca and that he was there for a while as a church musician in Alcalá de Henares . At the end of 1583 he left for South America, where he lived and worked in various places:

  • from 1584 to 1586 as conductor and music teacher in Santafé (today: Bogotá , Colombia )
  • from 1588 to 1590 conductor and music teacher in Quito (today's Ecuador )
  • 1591 Kapellmeister in Lima (today Peru ) for a short time
  • 1591 to 1597 Kapellmeister in Cuzco (today's Peru)
  • from 1597 until his death (with interruptions from 1609 to 1612 ( Cuzco )) Kapellmeister and music teacher in La Plata (today Sucre , Bolivia).

Work and meaning

Fernández Hidalgo's compositions captivate with their transparent polyphony without being overloaded. His works are in no way inferior to the works of the best Spanish composers of his time. His works include a Magnificat , several Salve Regina and many other vocal church music works. Because of his main focus in life in South America, Fernández Hidalgo became the first really well-known composer (in the occidental sense) in South America.
