Career
Early years
Álvaro Bautista gained his first experience on two wheels at the age of three on minibikes , with which he was also able to celebrate his first successes.
In 1997 he got into the Aprilia 50 cc -Cup to which he finished in sixth place overall. The following year he achieved third place in this racing series behind Jorge Lorenzo and Joan Olivé .
For 1999 he was selected from 400 pilots by Alberto Puig to contest the Copa Movistar , which he finished fifth.
In the following years he competed in the Spanish 125 cc championship . In 2002 he completed his first race in the motorcycle world championship as a wildcard rider in this class at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez .
125 cc class
The 2003 season was his first as a regular rider in the motorcycle world championship. Bautista drove an Aprilia in the team of the football star Clarence Seedorf , but was able to achieve 20th place in the overall standings with 31 points from 16 races. In the Spanish 125 cc championship, which he contested in parallel, he was still able to celebrate the championship title.
In 2004 he continued to drive in the Seedorf team; his teammate this season was his compatriot Héctor Barberá . With a second place at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Donington Park and three third places, he was able to achieve seventh place in the overall standings.
For the 2005 season , his team then switched from Aprilia to Honda . Although the Swiss Thomas Lüthi was able to celebrate the world championship title this season with this make, Bautista absolutely couldn't get on with the Honda and was unable to build on the successes of the previous season. With 47 points he was only 15th in the World Cup.
Therefore, Bautista decided to switch to the Master - MVA Aspar team of the former world champion Jorge Martínez for the 2006 season , where he could ride an Aprilia again. At the first race of the season in Jerez, he was able to celebrate his first victory immediately. Bautista dominated the entire season, finished on the podium in 14 of 16 races and scored points in every race. With eight wins and 338 points, he ultimately became the superior world champion in the 125 cc class. At the end of the season he was 76 points ahead of the World Cup runner-up, the Finn Mika Kallio .
250 cc class
For the 2007 season, Álvaro Bautista joined Jorge Martínez's team in the 250 cc class, where he piloted an Aprilia factory machine. His teammate was Alex De Angelis from San Marino . He got used to the bigger machine very quickly and was able to take second place behind Jorge Lorenzo in the second race, his home Grand Prix in Jerez . With victories in Italy and Portugal and a total of seven podium finishes, Bautista achieved fourth place in the World Cup and was named Rookie of the Year in the 250cc class. The Spaniard went into the 2008 season as a favorite for the title. After a win in Estoril, he crashed while in the lead in China and Italy. After three more victories in the season, the Spaniard came in second behind Gilera pilot Marco Simoncelli in the final . After the 2009 season , which Bautista finished with two wins and fourth place, he was promoted to the MotoGP class.
MotoGP class
Bautista signed with the Rizla - Suzuki factory team for 2010 , where he competed with Loris Capirossi . He achieved his best result in fifth at his home race, the Grand Prix of Catalonia . At the end of the year he had 85 points and 13th place to book. In 2011 , Bautista stayed with Suzuki, where only one machine was used for financial reasons. The Spaniard missed the first two races due to an injury and had physical problems after that. So he did not get beyond two sixth places as the best placement. Bautista finished the year with 67 points and 13th place.
Since 2012 Alvaro Bautista starts for the team of Fausto Gresini at Honda RC213V . In the first year he was fifth overall, and in 2013 the Spaniard finished sixth in the World Cup. In 2014 Bautista competed for Gresini on a Honda in the MotoGP class, then in 2015 in the Aprilia factory team. His teammate in the first half of the season was Marco Melandri , who was replaced by German Stefan Bradl after his dismissal for the second half of the season .
