The 1988 motorcycle world championship season was the 40th in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .

In the classes up to 500 cm³ and up to 250 cm³, 15 races were held , in the class up to 125 cm³ eleven, in the class up to 80 cm³ seven and in the sidecar nine races.
