Egbert Streuer
Egbert Streuer (born February 1, 1954 in Assen ) is a former Dutch motorcycle racer . With three world championship titles in the sidecar class of the motorcycle world championship , he is the most successful Dutch motorcycle racer in history.
During his active time, Streuer was not only seen as a fast and nervous driver, but also as a gifted technician. Although he mostly kept himself modestly in the background, he was always a striking figure in the paddock with his long, shaggy beard .
His son Bennie is currently also active in sidecar racing and became world champion in the F1 class with Geert Koerts in 2015.
Career
Egbert Streuer began his career in 1975 with co-driver Johan van der Kaap on a BMW - team in the Dutch championship motorcycle road that you finished in sixth place. As early as 1978, Streuer won his first Dutch championship title in the sidecar class with van der Kaap on a Schmid- Yamaha . In the same year , the two made their debut at the Austrian Grand Prix on the Salzburgring in the motorcycle world championship . At the last Grand Prix of the season in Czechoslovakia , the duo won their first World Cup point in tenth place. After two further Dutch championship titles and the World Cup ranks nine in 1979 and four in 1980 , Johan van der Kaap ended his career at the end of the 1980 season for personal reasons.
After experiments with a total of four different co-pilots in the sidecar of Streuer's LCR team and eighth place in the World Championship in 1981 , Bernard Schnieders became the new regular co-driver from the 1982 season . At the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Silverstone , the duo achieved their first Grand Prix victory of their career. The season ended in fourth place overall. In 1983 Streuer / Schneiders became vice world champions with two wins behind the Swiss team Rolf Biland / Kurt Waltisperg and thus finally established themselves among the world's best.
In the 1984 season Egbert Streuer won his first world title together with Bernard Schnieders on the LCR-Yamaha. The two won three Grand Prix and relegated the German duo Werner Schwärzel / Andreas Huber to second place with a three point lead. In 1985 the Dutch defended their title against Schwärzel, who with 73 points had just as many points as Streuer / Schnieders, but only had one win of the season and thus two fewer than the Dutch duo.
Also in 1986 season Egbert Streuer / Bernard Schnieders were world champions on LCR-Yamaha sidecar. This time they won five races and collected 75 championship points. The Frenchman Alain Michel and his compatriot Jean-Marc Fresc scored as many points as last year, but the Dutch had the greater number of victories on their account, which was decisive for the award of the title in the event of a tie.
In 1987 , Streuer / Schnieders had to give way to the British duo Steve Webster / Tony Hewitt in the overall World Cup . The biggest success of the season was winning the Dutch TT in Streuer's hometown of Assen , which they had never won before despite 14 Grand Prix victories. After the 1988 season , which the Dutch duo finished third without a win, Bernard Schnieders ended his active career after 15 wins, three World Cup and eight Dutch championship titles. The reason for this was the progressive commercialization of his sport, which Schnieders was dissatisfied with.
In the 1989 season Egbert Streuer fought again with his new co-driver Geral de Haas against Webster / Hewitt for the title, but ultimately had to let the British go first. In 1990 Streuer was again runner-up world champion together with de Haas and the British Scott Whiteside, who represented de Haas at the last race in Hungary .
In 1991 Egbert Streuer competed with co-pilots Pete Essaf from the USA and Peter Brown from Great Britain and for the first time with Krauser engines in the LCR team. He won the Dutch TT with Brown for the second time in his career and finished the season in third. In 1992 , Streuer / Brown finished fourth in the World Cup. The two celebrated their only victory of the season at the race in Assen, which was held as part of the Superbike World Championship run.
Before the 1993 season , Egbert Streuer decided to withdraw from active racing because of the dwindling public awareness of his sport and the associated lack of sponsorship money .
In his almost 20-year career, the Dutchman was three times sidecar world champion and twelve times Dutch champion and won 22 Grand Prix races. To this day he is the most successful Dutch starter in the motorcycle world championship.
