The 1978 motorcycle world championship season was the 30th in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .

Eleven races were held in the classes up to 500 cm³ and up to 350 cm³, twelve in the classes up to 250 cm³ and up to 125 cm³, seven in the class up to 50 cm³ and eight races for the teams .
