In the 1978 season Lega again denied the 250 cc World Championship for Morbidelli, but was unable to defend his title. His best results were two third places, with 44 points he was seventh overall. At the end of the season, the Italian withdrew from the World Cup.
The following year Lega took part in a few smaller races and competed for Ducati together with Víctor Palomo in the Le Mans 24-hour motorcycle race . At the end of the 1979 season, Mario Lega finally ended his active career.
