Dieter Braun (racing driver)
Dieter Braun (born February 2, 1943 in Ulm ), a businessman by profession, is a former German motorcycle racer .
Career
Dieter Braun grew up in Hermaringen in Baden-Württemberg . He began his motorsport career as a helper and soon afterwards as a driver on a Maico in motocross . After becoming regional junior champion, he converted the cross machine in 1965 and successfully took part in road races. In 1967 he won the German championship in the class up to 350 cm³ before Karl Hoppe . He repeated this success in 1968 and 1969 as a driver of the Neckermann racing team on a 125 cm³ MZ .
In his career he won 14 grands prix and was motorcycle world champion in 1970 on Suzuki in the 125 cc class and in 1973 on Yamaha in the 250 cc class .
Braun went down in history at the GDR Grand Prix at the Sachsenring in 1971 . The East German audience cheered his victory and began to sing along with the third verse of the song of the Germans , the (West) German national anthem , at the award ceremony . In response to this, the GDR government made the event an invitation race in the following years, in which almost only drivers from socialist countries were allowed to start. In 1972 the GDR Grand Prix took place again, from 1973 it disappeared from the World Cup calendar. The official reason for this was a lack of safety precautions and increased costs.
Braun ended his career after a serious accident in the 350cc race for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Salzburgring in 1977 at the age of 34. He fell when the track was full of debris after a collision between Franco Uncini and Johnny Cecotto and sustained a serious eye injury .
