Andrea Dovizioso (born March 23, 1986 in Forlimpopoli ( FC )) is an Italian motorcycle racer .
Dovizioso is seen as a serene and tactically smart driver, for whom the overall standings are more important than individual race wins. Based on his idol Kevin Schwantz , he started for many years with starting number 34, his nickname is Dovi .
Since the 2013 season he has competed in the Ducati factory team in the MotoGP class of the motorcycle world championship .
Career
Dovizioso was discovered by Aprilia , for whom he won the Italian 125 cc championship in 2000. In the 2001 season he was 125 cc European champion and drove as a wildcard driver in his first race in the motorcycle world championship in the class up to 125 cc.
125 cc class
For the 2002 season he switched to Honda and contested his first full season in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship.
After two years with rather inconspicuous results, Dovizioso made his breakthrough in the 2004 season . With five Grand Prix victories and eight pole positions , he was world champion with 293 points ahead of the Spaniard Héctor Barberá at the age of 18.
250 cc class
For the 2005 season he rose to the 250 cc class with Honda and immediately came third in the overall standings. During the 2006 season , Andrea Dovizioso achieved two wins and a total of eleven podium finishes. Although his Honda was inferior to the Aprilias in terms of performance, he fought with the Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo for the world title in the 250 cm³ class until the last race of the season and was runner-up.
Also in the 2007 season Dovizioso competed in the 250 World Championship on a Honda. Since Honda had decided to almost completely stop the development of the 250 cc two-stroke engine , its starting position was not good. Nevertheless, the Italian won two victories, did not make it into the points in just one race and was again runner-up behind Jorge Lorenzo with a total of ten podium finishes.
MotoGP class
For the 2008 season, Andrea Dovizioso switched to the MotoGP class, where he competed in the newly created JiR Team Scot on the number 04 Honda.
In 2009 Dovizioso started alongside the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa in the Honda factory team Repsol Honda . On July 26th, 2009 he celebrated his first Grand Prix victory in the "premier class" at the British Grand Prix in Donington Park, which was characterized by difficult weather conditions .
In the 2011 season Dovizioso started again alongside the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa and the Australian Casey Stoner on a Repsol Honda factory machine.
At the end of 2011, Dovizioso's Honda contract was not extended any further. Therefore, the Italian switched to Tech-3 for the 2012 season and drove a Yamaha YZR-M1. His teammate there was the Briton Cal Crutchlow . In 2013 he switched to Ducati. Nicky Hayden became his new teammate. Nicky Hayden left the team for the 2014 season and Cal Crutchlow became his teammate again. The 2015 season is his third for the Ducati team. His new team-mate this year is Andrea Iannone . In the following year he achieved his first victory in seven years at the Malaysian Grand Prix and his second overall MotoGP victory. For 2017 he got a new teammate in Jorge Lorenzo . Before the last race in Valencia, Andrea Dovizioso was 21 points behind Marc Márquez , who was first in the championship standings. In order to become world champion, Dovizioso had to win and the Spaniard had to reach no better than twelfth place. However, since Márquez finished third and Dovizioso gave up the race after a fall, the Italian was runner-up in the MotoGP class for the first time. In the 2018 season he became vice world champion for the second time, with a clear gap of 76 points on Marc Márquez. In this stand he was on podium nine times and won four races.
In 2019 Dovizioso will continue to compete in the MotoGP class for the Ducati works team. He also completed two races in the 2019 DTM season in Misano for the W Racing Team . There he reached positions twelve and 15.
Private
Dovizioso is married and has a daughter (* 2009).
