Maverick Ruiz Viñales (born January 12, 1995 in Figueres ) is a Spanish motorcycle racer . In 2013 he won the Moto3 class of the motorcycle world championship .
Career
Beginnings
Viñales began his motorsport career at the age of three. After he had ridden motocross , among other things , he focused on street motorcycle racing from 2002. In 2007 and 2008 he won the Catalan championship. In 2008 he also won the Mediterranean Trophy . In 2009 Viñales moved to the 125 cc class of the national Spanish championship . After becoming runner-up in his first season, he won the championship in 2010. He was also the 2010 European motorcycle champion in the 125 cc class.
125 cc World Championship
Viñales completed its first test drives in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship back in 2009.
2011
In 2011 Viñales switched to the motorcycle world championship and competed for Blusens by Paris Hilton Racing in the 125 cm³ class on an Aprilia . His teammate is Sergio Gadea . He set the second fastest time on test drives before the season. He finished his debut race in Qatar in ninth place among the top ten drivers. In his fourth race, the French Grand Prix at Le Mans , he scored his first world championship victory at the age of 16. He prevailed against his compatriot Nicolás Terol , who had won the three races before. The two racing drivers fought a duel over several laps in the race, which Viñales only won in the last corner. Three races later at the Dutch TT in Assen , he repeated this success at a Grand Prix that was prematurely canceled due to rain. At the Japan race in Motegi , Viñales mechanics worked too long on his motorcycle before the start of the warm-up lap, which is why he had to start the race from 33rd and last place on the grid. In that race he made up 29 places and finished fourth. He finished the season with victories in Sepang and Valencia , was third in the overall standings and thus the best newcomer ( Rookie of the Year ) in this class.
Moto3 class
The 2012 season started well for Viñales. After Terol and vice world champion Johann Zarco had moved up to Moto2 , he was considered the main favorite for the title, with Sandro Cortese and Luis Salom as toughest rivals . At the start in Qatar Viñales won ahead of newcomer Romano Fenati , Cortese came third and Salom fourth. At the Spanish Grand Prix, however, Viñales was only sixth, while Fenati won and took the championship lead. In the next race, the Grand Prix of Portugal , he had to give up early, while Viñales fought for victory with Cortese until the finish, but ultimately only had to admit defeat by a few hundredths. Viñales was now ten points ahead of Fenati, but two points behind the new leader Sandro Cortese. In the next race, the French Grand Prix , he lost ten points to the Swabian because he was eliminated early (Salom and Fenati also crashed), while Cortese was sixth. After that, however, the tide turned for the time being: Viñales won the next three races and was seven points ahead of Cortese before the German Grand Prix . There, however, Cortese won, while Viñales only finished 18th and was now 18 points behind Sandro Cortese. At the Italian Grand Prix , Viñales cut this gap in half with a win. It seemed like it would be a world championship fight until the last second. That changed in Indianapolis : Cortese finished second, while Viñales fell and was now 29 points behind. Also in the next two races, in which he finished fourth and fifth, he lost 17 points to the Germans and after missing the Aragon Grand Prix due to an accident in training, he even lost second place overall to Luis Salom, who did Won races. At the Japanese Grand Prix Viñales finished second behind Danny Kent and prevented Cortese, who had only finished sixth, from winning the title early (and he fought his way past Salom, who had not crossed the finish line). With three races to go, he still had a theoretical chance for the title, 56 points behind. At the Malaysian Grand Prix , however, he lost it for good because he skipped the race due to problems with his team (and even left it for a short time), so that Cortese won the race and the title and Salom also fought his way back to second place. In the last two races he returned to his team and was again third in the World Championship.
In the 2013 season Viñales fought again for the title, this time with his compatriots Luis Salom and Álex Rins . He won the races in Spain and France in the first half of the season and Viñales led the Grand Prix of San Marino , Catalonia and Australia for a long time, but was overtaken by Rins every time on the last lap. With two races to go, he was 22 points behind Salom, which seemed to mean that his title chances were gone. Then, however, he finished second behind Álex Márquez at the Japanese Grand Prix , while Salom and Rins both crashed and missed the points, so before the Valencia Grand Prix he had two points separated from Salom. Although he was in the lead at first, he crashed after a few laps and the title was gone for him. Now the battle was between Rins and Viñales. The latter ultimately won the race and the title ahead of Jonas Folger and Rins. He also finished in the top 5 of every race that year.
Moto2 class
For the 2014 season, Viñales and Salom switched to Pons HP 40 , who were world champions with Pol Espargaró last season , in the Moto2 class. He already won the second race in Texas and, after three more victories this season in Aragon , Philip Island and Sepang and several podium places, he finished third behind Esteve Rabat and Mika Kallio . He was also again Rookie of the Year .
MotoGP class
After just one season in the Moto2 category Viñales switched to Suzuki - factory team , which for the 2015 season returned to the MotoGP class and was team-mate Aleix Espargaró . This season he came in several places in the top ten and was twelfth in the overall standings.
In 2016 Viñales became significantly more competitive with Suzuki and was already on his way to a podium in race two, in Argentina , but he crashed on the final lap. At Le Mans he celebrated his first podium in the MotoGP class behind Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi . At the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Silverstone he was able to achieve his first victory in the premier class with a start-to-finish victory.
Viñales joined the Yamaha factory team for the 2017 Motorcycle World Championship and is now Valentino Rossi's teammate. Viñales replaced Jorge Lorenzo there, who in turn switched to Ducati .
Personal
Viñales owes his first name to Pete "Maverick" Mitchell , the title character of the action film Top Gun played by Tom Cruise - you fear neither death nor the devil . His cousin, Isaac Viñales is also a motorcycle racer and has been racing in the Supersport World Championship since 2019 .
