Jonas Folger (born August 13, 1993 in Mühldorf am Inn ) is a German motorcycle racer .

Career

Beginnings

Jonas Folger came into contact with motorsport at an early age, as his father and uncle were active in motorcycling themselves . Uncle Alexander Folger competed in four motorcycle Grand Prix races in 1995 and 1996 . Shortly after his third birthday, while on vacation in Italy , Jonas received his first motorcycle, a 50 cc motocross machine, from his father .

The Bavarian later took part in an ADAC Südbayern inspection course in Garching near Munich and was appointed to the ADAC Südbayern junior team for the German ADAC Mini Bike Cup . In 2003 Folger won all 14 races in this entry-level class, in which 50 cm³ Hondas were driven, and secured the title. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons he won the 65 cc Honda junior class of the ADAC Mini Bike Cup . In 2005 the Bavarian was one of the three riders selected from 1,500 applicants to take part in the Red Bull MotoGP Academy , the youth development program of the motorcycle world championship rights holder Dorna , which was supervised in Barcelona by the former Spanish Grand Prix rider Alberto Puig .

In 2006, Folger started in the 125 cc class of the Spanish motorcycle road championship, where he finished third overall in his debut year behind Pol Espargaró and Esteve Rabat . He was also named best driver of the Red Bull MotoGp Academy and was named Young Driver of the Year by the readers of Motorsport magazine .

For the 2007 season, a change in the rules of the Spanish championship followed, which meant that Folger had to load 16 kilograms in order to reach the new minimum weight, which had a negative impact on his performance. On July 8, 2007, the Bavarian won his first race in the German championship with a KTM on the Salzburgring at his first start in this racing series in the 125 cc class and was the youngest winner in the bis at the age of 13 years and 329 days then 83-year history of the championship.

125 cc / Moto3 World Championship

In the 2008 season, Jonas Folger competed successfully in various national championships, especially on tracks that also hosted World Championship races, in order to prepare for his debut in the motorcycle world championship . On August 17, 2008 , four days after his 15th birthday, Folger made his debut at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno with a wildcard . The Bavarian became the youngest German competitor in the history of the World Championship, which has been held since 1949 . He started in the 125cc class on a Red Bull MotoGP Academy KTM and was canceled due to a technical defect. At the following Grand Prix of San Marino in Misano , Folger achieved his first championship point in 15th place. By the end of the season he played another four Grands Prix, in which, however, he did not reach the points.

In the 2009 season Jonas Folger will contest his first 125 cm³ World Championship season as a fixed starter. He starts on an Aprilia from the Ongetta Team ISPA . His teammates are Andrea Iannone and Lorenzo Zanetti from Italy and Takaaki Nakagami from Japan . The Bavarian started the season very successfully, finishing sixth in Qatar and eighth in Japan . In the third race, the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez , Folger started the race from 35th and last place on the grid after engine problems in qualifying. There he moved up to fourth place in the meantime, but then retired after a self-inflicted fall in the fight for second place. At the following French Grand Prix in Le Mans , Folger showed a flawless performance in a rainy race that was marked by many falls and finished second behind Julián Simón , in his tenth Grand Prix ever, his first podium finish. The Bavarian became the youngest German ever to have achieved a podium in the motorcycle world championship that has been held since 1949 .

On June 21, 2009, Folger took part in the IDM run at the Sachsenring as a guest starter . He competed in an Aprilia provided by the Sachsenring team and won the race with a 17 second lead over the runner-up.

In the 2010 season he started on an Aprilia for the Ongetta Team in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship .

On June 12, 2011 Jonas Folger won his first Grand Prix victory at the Great Britain Grand Prix in Silverstone . At the age of 17 years and 303 days, he became the youngest German racing winner in the history of the motorcycle world championship. On November 30, 2011, Folger signed a Moto3 contract with the MZ Racing Team . Due to financial difficulties on the part of MZ , Folger could not be provided with a motorcycle. However, he should remain with the MZ Racing Team as a Moto2 and Moto3 test driver.

In March 2012 the change from MZ Racing Team to Ioda Racing became known. There he drove a self-made machine in Moto3, which often failed due to numerous technical problems. On August 2nd, 2012 it was announced that Jonas will join the reigning Moto3 world championship team, Mapfre Aspar Racing, with immediate effect. There he achieved his second Grand Prix victory in the second race in the new team at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic on August 26, 2012, and on August 29, 2012 he took his first pole position in Aragon . For the 2014 season, he switched to the AGR team and took his first pole position in qualifying for the fifth race of the season (French GP).

Moto2 World Championship

Folger won his first Moto2 race on March 29, 2015 at the first race of the season in Qatar. On May 2, 2015, Folger won the fourth race of the season in Jerez . For the 2016 season he is moving to the Dynavolt Intact GP team and has Sandro Cortese as a teammate.

MotoGP World Championship

In early May 2016, just before the French Grand Prix , the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team announced that Jonas Folger will be one of their drivers from the 2017 season .

In the overall standings of the 2017 season, he finished 10th with 84 points. His best result was 2nd place in the race in Germany at the Sachsenring . In this race he also drove the fastest lap.

In October 2018, Jonas Folger suffered a broken nose after a bird hit the visor of his helmet at 245 km / h during Moto2 test drives on the Circuito de Jerez .

In the 2019 season he was a test driver for the Yamaha MotoGP team .

IDM

Since the Yamaha test program in 2020 is to be carried out exclusively by Japanese drivers again, Jonas Folger was not offered a further contract as a test driver. For this reason, Folger switched to MGM Racing in 2020 in the Superbike class of the International German Motorcycle Championship , where he will start on a Yamaha YZF-R1M . In addition, wildcard appearances in the Superbike World Championship are planned.

Private

Jonas Folger lives in Spain in a shared apartment with racing colleague Marcel Schrötter . His father Jakob has a car workshop in Schwindegg.

In September 2017 Jonas Folger suffered from burnout syndrome .
