Alexandre "Alex" Barros (born October 18, 1970 in São Paulo , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian motorcycle racer . With 276 races contested, he was the record holder in the motorcycle world championship until Loris Capirossi's 277th Grand Prix start .

Career

Barros drove his first race at the age of eight in the Brazilian Minibike Championship, which he won straight away. In the following two years he won the Brazilian moped championship, in 1981 the national title in the class up to 50 cm³ and in 1985 in the 250 cc class  .

In 1986, Barros made his debut at the age of 15 on the international stage of the motorcycle world championship in the 80 cc class and was able to collect six championship points in his first season. In 1988 he was promoted to the class up to 250 cm³, in which he took 18th place in the World Cup in the second year.

In 1990 Barros became the youngest driver of all time to switch to the 500 cc class at Cagiva . After some results in the points, Barros stood for the first time on the podium in 1992 with a third place in Assen . The move to Suzuki in 1993 finally brought the breakthrough. At the Spanish Grand Prix , Barros won his first of seven races. In the years that followed, Barros was always competitive and finished in fourth place in the World Championship five times. At the end of 2005 , however, he had to make room for the youngsters. He did not get a contract for the 2006 season and accepted an offer from Team Klaffi Honda for the Superbike World Championship , where he was able to assert himself well with two wins and sixth place in the World Championship.

For the 2007 season he returned to the MotoGP class and drove a Ducati Desmosedici GP7 for the D'Antin team . With a third place as the best result, he finished tenth in the World Championship.
