Colin Edwards
Colin Edwards (born February 27, 1974 in Houston , Texas ), nickname "Texas Tornado", is an American motorcycle racer and two-time Superbike world champion .
Career
Always dreamed Texas Tornado of it, in the Grand Prix to change Trek. Despite two Superbike World Championship titles in 2000 and 2002 , Honda never gave him this chance. But after his second Superbike title in 2002 it worked out.
Edwards was twice world champion and twice vice world champion in the Superbike World Championship between 1999 and 2002. With the Australian Troy Bayliss , who also moved to the MotoGP class in 2003, he fought tough duels there for two years. At the time, both were by far the measure of all things in the Superbike World Championship.
The 2002 World Cup was particularly tough. Troy Bayliss looked like the sure winner halfway through the season. But Edwards did not give up. With an impressive winning streak, the Texan took the title back in the last race.
Colin Edwards had offers from Kawasaki , Yamaha and Ducati for the 2003 season , but eventually switched to Aprilia . A big, as it turned out later, too big a challenge. As early as 2002, the Italians could n't win a flower pot in the MotoGP class with Régis Laconi . At the side of his team mate Noriyuki Haga , the fast American wanted to turn the tide in favor of the RS3. But the Texan's disenchantment came faster than he thought. At the opening Grand Prix in Suzuka , Japan , Edwards caught the eye with a sixth place, but this should remain his best result of the season. More was simply not possible with the Aprilia, which was overloaded with technology. In the other races he had to be content with ranks between ten and 15.
In the following season, 2004 , Colin Edwards drove a Honda RC211V in the Gresini team at the side of Vice World Champion Sete Gibernau , recorded his first two podiums and finished fifth in the World Championship.
For 2005 and 2006 he then signed a two-year contract with the Yamaha factory team as Valentino Rossi's teammate . He was the only driver in the entire field to score points in all 17 Grand Prix of the 2005 season. Every time he finished in tenth place and was on the podium three times, but has not yet been able to win in MotoGP. With his team-mate Valentino Rossi, who became world champion driver, he won the 2005 constructors' championship for Yamaha, the team title for the Gauloises-Yamaha team.
After mediocre performance in 2007 , he joined the Yamaha Tech 3 team in 2008 . His first teammate there was the then reigning Superbike World Champion James Toseland . In 2009 he was able to distance him significantly and continued to drive with Ben Spies in the Yamaha Tech 3 team in the 2010 season . Edwards remained loyal to the team in the 2011 season and received another MotoGP rookie as a team-mate in Cal Crutchlow . At the Malaysian GP , Edwards was involved in the tragic accident through no fault of his own , in which Marco Simoncelli died . Edwards suffered a serious shoulder injury and could not start the last race in Valencia . In the 2012 season Edwards drove a BMW-powered (tuned engine of an S 1000 RR ) Suter machine for the Forward Racing Team . He also competed with NGM Mobile Forward Racing in the 2013 season , his teammate was Claudio Corti . The two each drove an FTR - Kawasaki .
The 2014 season was his third with NGM Mobile Forward Racing; Aleix Espargaró was his teammate this season. On April 11, 2014, Colin Edwards announced that he would retire from MotoGP at the end of the season.
