Sylvain Guintoli (born June 24, 1982 in Montélimar , Département Drôme , France ) is a French motorcycle racer .
Between 2000 and 2008 he competed in the motorcycle world championship . In 2010 Sylvain Guintoli moved to the Superbike World Championship .
Career
Beginnings
Sylvain Guintoli began his career in 1994 with scooter races , after which he competed in national 125 cm³ cups until 1998 . From 1999 the French competed in the open French motorcycle championship, which he won in 2000 in the 250 cm³ class.
Motorcycle world championship
In 2000 , Guintoli made his debut at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans as a wildcard driver in the 250cc class of the motorcycle world championship , but without seeing the checkered flag.
In the 2001 season , Guintoli started on an Aprilia in the Equipe de France , a private team, permanently in the 250 World Cup. In his first year as a regular driver, he collected 44 points and thus came 14th in the World Championship. His best result was a very good fourth place at the Dutch TT .
In 2002 he was hired as a test driver by the Gauloises Yamaha Tech 3 team. At the Grand Prix of Czech Republic Sylvain Guintoli made his debut on the then 500-cm³- two-stroke - Yamaha in the MotoGP class, but finished second in this race only last place.
For the 2003 season, the Frenchman switched back to the 250 cc class and started again on an Aprilia for the Campetella Racing team . At the Grand Prix of the Netherlands he reached the only podium of his career with third place. In the overall classification, Guintoli took a tenth place with 101 points, which is very respectable for a private driver. The following season was less successful, Sylvain Guintoli was 14th in the world championship with 42 points. In 2005 and 2006 he started again for the Equipe de France and came in ten and nine respectively in the World Cup.
His consistently good performance on technically inferior private machines earned him a place in the Dunlop Yamaha team in the MotoGP class in 2007 , which Guintoli himself described as a “dream come true”, although he was riding hopelessly inferior Dunlop tires the start had to go. His teammate was the experienced Japanese Makoto Tamada , whom Guintoli clearly outshone. The first MotoGP season was very eventful for Sylvain Guintoli. At the end of the season he often caused a sensation, especially in the training runs, by putting on soft qualifying tires and sometimes even beating world champion Casey Stoner . At his home Grand Prix in Le Mans , Guintoli led a race in the rain for the first time, but crashed and finished tenth. In training for the US Grand Prix in Laguna Seca, he himself collided with Alex Hofmann while braking into the famous “Corkscrew” curve , who sustained serious injuries to his left hand. Guintoli achieved his best result of the season at the rainy Grand Prix van Japan, where he finished fourth. With 50 points, the Frenchman achieved 16th place in the World Cup.
The 2008 season denied Sylvain Guintoli in the Alice team, where he at Ducati was launched. The Frenchman finished in each of the 18 races and only failed to finish in the points once. His best placement was sixth in the rain race for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring . With 67 points, Guintoli finished 13th in the overall standings and was clearly overshadowed by his Spanish team-mate Toni Elías , who had 92 points. His contract with the Italian team, which expired at the end of the season, was not renewed.
British Superbike Championship
In the 2009 season, Sylvain Guintoli competed in the British Superbike Championship for the Crescent Suzuki team on a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 . At Brands Hatch , he won his first race at his first ever BSB start. In the second run he was second. In the following two races at Oulton Park , the Frenchman finished third twice. In the lead-up lap to the first run of the third event, which was held in Donington Park , Guintoli collided with Joshua Brookes and broke his right tibia and fibula . He was then forced to skip the following six events. After his return, Sylvain Guintoli did not achieve a podium finish. He finished the overall standings in eighth place with 147 points.
Superbike World Championship
For the 2010 season, Sylvain Guintoli switched to the Superbike World Championship , where he competed in the Suzuki factory team Alstare alongside Briton Leon Haslam . While Haslam was runner-up behind Max Biaggi , the Frenchman finished the season seventh overall. He scored points in 25 of the 26 runs, his best placings were a total of three fourth places. Only a disqualification during the first run of his home race in Magny-Cours , when he ignored a drive-through penalty imposed on him for taking a short cut in a chicane, prevented 100 percent points from being scored.
In the 2011 season , Guintoli will compete in the newly formed Czech Liberty team on a Ducati 1098R . His teammate will be the Czech Jakub Smrž .
His greatest success to date was the world title in the 2014 season of the Superbike World Championship .
