Tom Sykes (born August 19, 1985 in Huddersfield , England ) is a British motorcycle racer .

Career

Sykes began his career by entering the British Supersport Championship in the 2003 season and remained in the racing series until the end of the 2006 season. He drove for Suzuki during this time . In the 2004 and 2005 seasons he was fifth in the overall standings, but was able to improve in his last season and was second in 2006 behind Cal Crutchlow .

For the 2007 season he was promoted to the British Superbike Championship and at the same time moved to the Stobart Honda team . At the end of the season, he finished sixth. For the 2008 season he moved to Rizla Suzuki in 2008 . With the change he improved to fourth place overall in the BSB and also took part in two racing weekends in the 2008 Superbike World Championship .

Superbike World Championship

In 2009 Sykes moved to the Superbike World Championship . In his first season he won the Yamaha - factory team Yamaha World Superbike ninth place in the standings. Teammate Ben Spies became world champion with 14 wins from 28 races.

For the 2010 season, Tom Sykes switched to Kawasaki -Werksteam. In 2010 and 2011 he had only moderate success and reached the overall positions 14 and 13 respectively. Nevertheless, he won the second race at the Nürburgring last season . In the 2012 season he improved a lot and at the end of the season was second behind Max Biaggi with 357.5 points and thus only half a point behind . In addition, with nine pole positions, he set a new season record that is still unsurpassed today.

He finally won his first title in the Superbike World Championship in the 2013 season . He scored 447 points and was world champion ahead of Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli .

Sykes finished third with Kawasaki in 2014 and 2015, second in 2016, again third in 2017 and fourth overall in 2018. From the 2019 racing season, Sykes will drive for the BMW works team. [outdated]
