The GSX-R 1000 is a motorcycle model in the Superbikes category from the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki . It was introduced to the German-speaking market in 2001.

history

The first series of GSX-R 1000 with a liquid-cooled 988-cm³- 16V - DOHC - line four-cylinder with a transverse crankshaft was one of the first series motorcycles with a power to weight ratio of approximately one kilogram (kg) per horsepower; namely 118 kW (160 HP) at 170 kg dry weight. In 2002, in addition to the colors, an unregulated catalyst and a better coating of the fork were introduced compared to the previous year, as in the case of the K1 models this would wear off over time on many machines.

At Suzuki, it is common for new models of their sports machines to be introduced every two years. So one can say that all the odd numbers of the “K” models are new releases and the even “K” numbers have only small changes and new colors.

The GSX-R 1000 "K3" model was introduced back in 2003. In addition to a completely new design, frame and chassis, the engine now developed 121 kW (164 hp) and the dry weight was reduced by two to 168 kg. Another important innovation was the radial brake system at the front with brake discs now 300 mm in size.

Technology (model 2005/2006)

Suzuki has always relied on the proven engine concept for the GSX-R 1000 K5 / K6; a liquid-cooled inline four - cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts and four titanium valves per cylinder. They have an electronic multi-point intake manifold injection .

The chassis consists of an aluminum bridge frame, a fully adjustable, carbon nitride-coated 43 mm upside-down fork and a solid aluminum two-arm swing arm with an indirectly hinged, fully adjustable central strut . A standard steering damper effectively suppresses handlebar knocking ("kick back"), and an anti-hopping clutch ("slipper clutch") prevents the rear wheel from slamming if the driver downshifts hard while braking. For the first time, the exhaust system was made entirely of titanium.

The GSX-R 1000 has a powerful brake system with two 310 mm brake discs at the front, radially screwed 4-piston fixed calipers from Tokico and a finely adjustable radial brake pump.

The K5 / K6 was recalled because the frame was broken. To remedy the problem, a reinforcement is glued to the frame by a workshop. Only the K9 (model year 2009) has a completely redesigned frame.

Racing

The GSX-R 1000 has been Suzuki's homologation model for the Superbike World Championship since 2004 , replacing the GSX-R 750 that was previously used for regulatory reasons. Race-adapted versions of the GSX-R 1000 also start in the stock sport class and in long-distance races in various racing series.

In 2005 , Troy Corser and the Suzuki works team on the GSX-R 1000 won the FIM Superbike World Championship.

From 2007 to 2009 Max Neukirchner drove the GSX-R 1000 for Suzuki in the Superbike World Championship.

Others

In German-speaking countries, the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 is also known under the name Gixxer or Kilogixxer . She can also be seen in videos of the Swedish Ghost Rider and the German Turborider .

The individual models are usually only listed under one abbreviation, here the letter stands for the decade (2001–2009 = K, 2010–2019 = L) and the number indicates the year of construction of the motorcycle (2001 = 1, 2005 = 5 etc.) , this factory code is used on many Suzuki motorcycle models.
