Samuel Deane "Sam" Lowes (born September 14, 1990 in Lincoln ) is a British motorcycle racer .

His twin brother Alex Lowes is also a motorcycle racer and competes in the Superbike World Championship for Kawasaki .

Career

In the 2009 and 2010 seasons Lowes competed in the first races in the Supersport World Championship . As a regular driver, he took part in the Supersport World Championship since the 2011 season and finished the season with 129 points in sixth place in the overall standings for the Parkalgar Honda team . In the 2012 season he moved to Bogdanka PTR Honda and ended up with 172 points behind Kenan Sofuoğlu and Jules Cluzel third in the overall standings. For the 2013 season Lowes left Honda and switched to the Russian team Yakhnich Motorsport on the Yamaha YZF-R6 and won his first world title in the Supersport World Championship.

In 2014 he switched to Moto2 where he competed for the Speed Up team on their own designs and finished the 2015 season with fourth place. In the last season he also took his first Moto2 victory at the Texas Grand Prix . In 2016 he switched to the Federal Oil Gresini team, started on a Kalex and won two races ( Spain and Aragon ), but fell to fifth place in the World Championship.

In 2017 Lowes moved up to the MotoGP class and remained on the same team that has been competing in MotoGP with Aprilia since 2015 . However, the season was a disaster, Lowes only scored five points and was clearly in the shadow of his teammate Aleix Espargaró . It was already confirmed in the summer that Fausto Gresini would replace him with his compatriot Scott Redding for 2018 .

In 2018 , Lowes decided to return to Moto2. He now rode a KTM for Swiss Innovative Investors . He struggled to adapt to Moto2 again and was only 16th in the final ranking, clearly beaten by his 18-year-old team-mate Iker Lecuona (twelfth). In 2019 , Lowes returned to Federal Oil Gresini and again drove a Kalex. As in 2016, he was the only rider in the Moto2 team. As in the previous year, he finished the season in 16th place.

In 2020 Lowes switched to the Marc VDS Racing Team and continues to drive a Kalex. His team mate is the Spaniard Augusto Fernández , who is also new to the team . While he had to sit out of the season opener, the Grand Prix of Qatar , due to injury, he finished fourth in the second race of the season in Spain, his best Moto2 position since his return.
