The world champion will be the driver or manufacturer who has accumulated the most points in the world championship by the end of the season. When distributing points, the placements are taken into account in the overall result of the respective race. The top fifteen drivers in each race receive points according to the following scheme:

Deaths
The Belgian Michaël Paquay had a serious accident on May 9, 1998 on the high-speed track in training for the Italian run in Monza. Several drivers were involved in the accident that occurred in the morning when approaching the first chicane. Paquay was trying to overtake Honda rider Antonio Calasso when he collided with him and fell to the ground. The Belgian was overwhelmed by the immediately following Sébastien Charpentier and Ferdinando Di Maso . Michaël Paquay died that same evening in the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza from his severe head and chest injuries.
