The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli , formerly Autodromo di Santamonica , is a motorsport racetrack in Misano Adriatico ( RN ) in Italy . The route is 4.2 km long.
Currently, the San Marino Grand Prix as part of the Motorcycle World Championship and a run for the Superbike World Championship are being held here.
history
The Misano circuit was planned in 1969, opened in 1972 and operated entirely privately. Initially, the length of the runway was 3.488 km, there was only a very small pit system and few track safety vehicles.
In 1993 the route was then extended to 4.060 km, and a new pit building with a 600 m² media center was built. In 1996 and 1997 the pit facilities were enlarged again, and a permanent stand was built later.
From autumn 2006 to spring 2007 the route was rebuilt and completely revised. Above all, by reversing the direction of travel (in future clockwise ), the run-off zones could be expanded and route safety increased in order to meet the requirements of the MotoGP class.
After the death of the motorcycle racer Marco Simoncelli in Sepang in 2011 , who came from Cattolica near Misano Adriatico, the track was originally to be renamed the Marco Simoncelli Circuit . Ultimately, the course was renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli .
Racing events
Since 1991 races for the Superbike World Championship have taken place in Misano, and between 1980 and 1993 the track hosted the Grand Prix of Nations a total of ten times as part of the Motorcycle World Championship .
Since the 2007 season , the motorcycle world championship has been back in Misano and hosts the San Marino Grand Prix . In addition, there are races for the European Truck Racing Championship and numerous public rides on the track every year.
On September 5, 2010, the Japanese driver Shōya Tomizawa was killed in an accident during the Moto2 race .
