Pin 25 years all about Scots

The Schottenring was, next to the Nürburgring , the Schleizer Dreieck , the Solitude , the Sachsenring and the AVUS , one of the oldest race tracks in Germany. The name Schottenring is derived from the nearby town of Schotten , located between Fulda and Gießen . Even before the construction of the Hockenheimring , the Schottenring was to be developed into a “real” automobile race track, which should even be suitable for Formula 1 .

history

The Vogelsberg Automobile and Motorcycle Club was founded on July 22, 1925, and opened the track on September 12, 1925 with the first motorcycle race around Schotten . The course of the 16.080 km long circuit led the participants from Schotten via Rudingshain and Götzen back to Schotten. Until 1937, races for the German Motorcycle Road Championship were held on this route, which consisted of public country roads , and in 1938 a sports car race was also held for the first time .

In the war years , however, the engines fell silent here too, and races around Schotten were not held again until 1947 . Runs for racing and sports cars continued to be part of the program until 1950. The Schottenring reached the peak of its sporting importance in 1953 , when the German Grand Prix for motorcycles, which was part of the motorcycle world championship , was held here. Despite a drivers strike against the difficult and dangerous street circuit, the small classes were held as world championship runs.

In 1955, after the terrible accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race, only a few smaller events took place at the Schottenring, and in 1956 the track was finally over. In the years 1968 to 1983 the race track was revived by the MSC Rund um Schotten association , so that motorcycle races and rallies could take place there again . Since 1989, historic Grand Prix races have been held on a 1.4 km long inner-city circuit in Schotten, which are reminiscent of the great past of this racetrack.
