The Heidbergring near Geesthacht is a race track on which events for motorcycles , cars and karts can be held. With a maximum length of only 852 m, the current version opened in 1980 is currently Germany's smallest permanent race track.

history

Heidbergring Race Control Tower

The Geesthacht Motorsport Club , founded in 1951, carried out several motocross races on a track in the Heid Mountains from 1956 to 1964. When it was no longer available due to structural measures in 1965, the city of Geesthacht offered the club a lease on Fahrendorfer Weg in a former sand pit. There, in 1966, with financial support from the ADAC Gau Hansa, the first version of the Heidbergring was created, which included a motocross and auto-cross track, a kart track and a training track for dirt track drivers. There was space for up to 16,000 spectators on the terraced auditorium.

In 1978 the decision was made to create a permanent asphalt racetrack on the site at that time. At the time, according to the club, it was the third such facility in Germany after the Nürburgring and the Hockenheimring . Construction began in August 1979. As a result, 8,000 cubic meters of soil were removed, 9,000 square meters of asphalt were built and 452 m of rainwater sewer was laid. The route was opened on May 15, 1980.

In 2001 the operating company of the Heidbergring was spun off from the Geesthacht Motorsport Club in order to separate the economic expenses for operation and investments on the route from the club's business.

The last extensive overhaul of the racetrack took place in 2006, with the paddock also being overhauled in addition to new asphalting and the currently existing container buildings being built.

Route description

Heidbergring - south view with an overview of the paddock

The longest route, 852 m long and 9-13 m wide, is paved throughout. A short connection allows the configuration of 3 different route variants. Since the route is not secured by guard rails but by earth walls , in principle all route variants can be driven both clockwise and counter-clockwise , so that theoretically 6 route variants can be defined despite the shortness of the route. This makes the route unique among German motorsport facilities.

An additional 176 m long off-road section set up in the 1990s, but which has not been in use for a number of years, also allowed further route variants for super moto events earlier .

The protection with earth walls also ensures that rides are usually cheaper or with less serious damage to the emergency equipment. The entire route can be overlooked from the natural grandstands. A footpath leads around halfway.

The track has no pit system, just a short pit lane with a temporary shelter. The paddock in the southern interior area has an area of around 3000 m² and houses some container buildings, which include a bistro, the administration offices and the track technology (e.g. timekeeping office). The race control tower is also designed as a separate building in container construction.

Events

In the early years, touring cars , GT cars, historic racing cars and formula cars started on the Heidbergring . The first race weekend on May 15, 1980 was u. a. contested with Formula Ford and touring cars.

On June 12, 1988, among other things, the Formula König started on the Heidbergring. The winner of the race was the young driver who started from pole and later 7 times Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher , who also won the championship title in the series this season.

The ADAC Ilmenau Slalom and individual runs of the DMSB Slalom Cup are currently being run regularly on the route . In addition, the Norderstedter AMC eV regularly organizes rally sprint events on the Heidbergring.

In the karting sector, kart races of the German and European championships were also held on the facility in the first few years. Currently, the karting club Saterland eV regularly organizes a run for the self-organized DNKM (German Dutch Kart Championship) on the track.

The operator also offers the facility for rent on a daily basis for safety training, club events and company presentations. In addition, various providers regularly carry out exercise, training and setting drives as well as curve training.
