Route profile of the Halle-Saale loop

The Halle-Saale Loop is a motorsport racing track in Halle (Saale) . From 1950 to 1967 and since 2010 motorcycle and automobile races have taken place on the track .

history

In 1950, the first thoughts arose in the Halle Motorsport Association (MSG Halle e.V.) to enable racing close to the city. It was decided to create a route west of the Peißnitz Island suitable for motorcycle and automobile sports . The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 26, 1950 with a budget of 135,000 East German marks. The route was completed on June 10th. A total of 1.2 km of new route was built and over 4000 t of construction material was moved.

The opening races were contested on June 25, 1950. The first winner was Erhart Krumpholz from Zwickau on IFA - DKW in the course of motorcycles up to 125 cm³. On October 10, 1954, a grass track race was held inside the track . The grass track was replaced in the 1960s by the construction of the new ice rink and a go-kart track . On April 23, 1967, the 22nd and, for the time being, the last racing weekend on the Halle-Saale loop was celebrated for the next 43 years, as no more motorsport events were possible due to the rapid growth of Halle-Neustadt . The winner in the Formula 3 race was Paul Deetens on Brabham .

particularities

  • In April 1951 the first "socialist" Formula 2 racing car drove here.
  • In 1953, the MZ works team started here for the first time.
  • Brigitte Döhler made her debut on the track, finished third immediately and soon afterwards also won on the Halle-Saale loop.
  • Joachim Jahnke, who considered the Halle-Saale loop to be his home route, looked around for a new route and found what he was looking for in nearby Teutschenthal , where he established the Teutschenthal basin .

Race 2010

Heinz Rosner, third place in the 250 cc class

On July 10, 2010, racing was resumed with the 23rd International Halle / Saale Loop Race . In front of around 8,500 spectators, seven evaluation classes and two additional classes were run without evaluation. Third place in the 500 cm³ class went to the then 71 year old Heinz Rosner on a factory MZ- RE Twin (built in 1968). As early as 1958, at the age of 19, Rosner competed in his first motorcycle race on the Halle-Saale loop and in the following years took several second and third places on this route.

The planned 24th International Halle / Saale Loop Race was canceled in April 2011 by the organizer. The reasons were conditions imposed by the city of Halle and a lack of sponsorship interest. The organizer, for his part, justified the cancellation with problems in getting the necessary budget for the race together. The race for 2012 was similar.

Flood 2013 and the consequences

During the floods in June 2013 , parts of the route were under water and the largest district of Halle-Neustadt to the west was threatened. The protective Gimritzer dam here was damaged and had to be massively reinforced with sandbags to prevent it from seeping through. Hence, there were immediate plans to build a new dam.

As early as July 2013, the eastern part of the racetrack was demolished to make way for a new flood protection dike, which has not yet been built because of numerous problems (including the legality of the dam construction, narrowing of the flood area, tree felling). The 2010 race was the last on the Halle-Saale loop for the time being. However, the city of Halle plans to restore the Halle-Saale loop after the dike has been built. It is not yet known whether the track can then be used again for races. In November 2013, a demonstration was held to maintain the route.

Routing

Until the partial demolition in 2013, all parts of the original racetrack from 1967 existed and served public road traffic. The start and finish of the 5.267 km long route was on Gimritzer Damm , which was then known as the concrete straight . From there , we drove towards the south bend , from which we went to the Peißnitz area. After driving through the long curve of the youth and a subsequent straight, it went over the fast Weinberg curve on the Weinbergweg in the direction of Kröllwitz. After a 90 ° left curve, the north curve , the route led past today's university clinic to Hubertusplatz . This bend was known as the Hubertus bend or the Friedensring . From there it was almost full throttle for two kilometers over the Heideallee and start and finish to the south bend . Some events also one kilometer to 2.66 truncated variant with a hairpin bend before was Weinberg curve for Gimritzer dam sail out.
