All about bulkheads
Around Scots was a motorsport -Veranstaltung in Scots , on the non-permanent race track of the Scots ring was fought from 1925 to 1955 22 times and currently as a veteran race is performed again.
history
The first edition of the race took place on September 12, 1925. The initiator of the event was the Vogelsberg Automobile and Motorcycle Club founded on July 22, 1925 . One of the winners on the 16.080 km long Schottenring between Schotten , Rudingshain and Götzen was Carl Schott , one of the co-founders of the race in a DKW ARe 175 .
In the years that followed, the event became an integral part of the racing calendar of the German Road Motorbike Championship and the top German drivers and works that were successful across Europe competed every year. Until 1937, with the exception of 1934 and 1935, when construction work was taking place on the track, these motorcycle races were held on the track, which was made up of public country roads.
In the war years , however, the engines fell silent here too, and races around Schotten were not held again until 1947 . Up to and including 1950, although Germany was already divided, the all-German motorcycle championship was held here as well. The record man at that time was Georg Meier from Mühldorf , who won the half-liter race six times in a row between 1947 and 1952 on his supercharged 500 cc BMW boxer . The race reached the climax of its sporting importance in 1953 , when the German Grand Prix for motorcycles, which was part of the motorcycle world championship , was held here. Despite a drivers' strike against the difficult and dangerous street course, the small classes up to 125 and 250 cm³ were counted as world championship runs. After a total of three fatal accidents and a serious accident involving Geoff Duke , one of the world's best pilots at the time, in 1951 and 1952 , the fast and difficult Schottenring was increasingly given the reputation of a dead end. From 1953 onwards there were no longer any carriage races
In 1955, after the terrible accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race, there were only a few smaller events at the Schottenring. This year was the last time around Schotten. 1956 came the final end for the route. From 1968 to 1983 the race was revived by the MSC Rund um Schotten association so that motorcycle races and rallies could take place there again . Since 1989, historic Grand Prix races have taken place on a 1.4 km long inner-city circuit in Schotten, reminding of the great past of this race.
Deadly accidents
There have been a total of eleven fatal accidents in the history of Rund um Schotten. Among other things, the experienced and internationally successful pilot Hans Winkler had an accident in 1936 . There were a total of six deaths between 1948 and 1955. For example, unfortunate Claudio Mastellari and Kurt Praetorius, a passenger in the sidecar of Fritz Hillebrand , 1951, Lous van Rijswijk in 1952 fatal.
