Toni Bauhofer
Anton "Toni" Bauhofer (born January 25, 1892 in Munich ; † January 10, 1968 there ) was a German automobile and motorcycle racing driver .
Bauhofer is considered one of the pioneers of German motorcycle racing and was one of the first top German racing drivers . In his career he won the German motorcycle road championship four times .
Career
Born in Munich, Toni Bauhofer worked after his mechanic apprenticeship at Vomag in Plauen and later at Maffei and Rapp-Motorenwerke in his hometown. During the First World War he volunteered as a reconnaissance and later a fighter pilot . After the end of the war, Bauhofer worked as a pilot at Süddeutsche Flugbild GmbH . Later he was involved in the development of Megola , a machine with 640- cc - five-cylinder - radial engine involved in the front wheel. On the racing version of this motorcycle, Toni Bauhofer competed very successfully in motorcycle races between 1921 and 1924 together with his team mates Josef Stelzer and Albin Tommasi. In 1924 he won the title in the 1000 cm³ class of the German motorcycle road championship, which was held for the first time, by winning the Schleizer triangle race on the Megola .
After the end of Deutsche-Megola-Werke GmbH , Toni Bauhofer switched to Bayerische Motorenwerke on January 1, 1925 , where he was a works driver until 1929. In 1927 he won the Eifel race for motorcycles in the 500 cm³ class on the newly opened Nürburgring - Nordschleife . In 1928, the man from Munich again won the title in the German 1000 cm³ road championship and drove u. a. Victories at the Eilenriederennen in Hanover , on the Marienberger and Schleizer triangles .
From 1929 to 1935 Toni Bauhofer, who was known as a fair sportsman, outstanding technician and great driving talent, was a works driver for the Zschopau manufacturer DKW . In 1930 and 1932 he won the title in the 500 cc class of the German championship. Between 1931 and 1934 he also drove the DKW F1 - seater . At the end of the 1935 season, Bauhofer suffered a broken thigh in a serious accident while training for the Feldberg race in the Taunus and decided to withdraw from active racing. He then looked after the young and private drivers at DKW for two years.
From 1937 Bauhofer ran a motorcycle agency and workshop in his hometown. In 1961 he was awarded the ADAC sports badge with diamonds , who achieved around 250 victories in his career at home and abroad .
