Eilenriederennen
The Eilenriederennen was a motorcycle race organized by the ADAC and held a total of 22 times on the non-permanent race track in the Eilenriede in Hanover from 1924 to 1939 and from 1950 to 1955. Since 2003, a running event with start and finish at the Lister Tower has been taking place under this name, where the distances 5 km, 10 km and half marathon (21 km) can be completed.
history
The first official Eilenriederennen started on March 30, 1924 with 168 motorcycles . The event quickly developed into a major local event and into a motorsport facility with an international reputation.
In 1929 more than 50,000 spectators followed the sporting event. A prominent participant in the early 1930s was the future automobile racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer . Until 1939, the spring races were a regular part of the German Road Motorbike Championship , in which the internationally successful German pilots and factories competed.
Up to 1937 there were (at least) eleven fatal accidents in 22 races. The victims were the drivers Willi Murken in 1928, Karel Baar (Netherlands) and Friedrich Messerschmidt in 1929, Haupt and Fritz Weber in 1933, Wilhelm Kobbe and Willy Prötzig in 1934, Onni Kyrö (Finland) and Josef Lohner in 1937 and Günther Less in 1952, who turned around in the Eilenriede Life came.
The races were suspended during World War II . Around 150,000 spectators came to the Eilenriede for the first event after the war in 1950. Since then, motorcycle races for the German championship have taken place again. The number of viewers increased from 40,000 at the beginning to 130,000 in 1951. After that, the audience enthusiasm declined. Environmental reasons and increased safety requirements after the accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955 led to the cancellation of the race in 1956 and the end of the race.
Racetrack
The 4.8 kilometer long circuit in the northern Eilenriede , the city forest of Hanover , led in a triangular shape through the middle of the forest area and was driven counter- clockwise . According to an old sketch, the start and finish point was at the Lister Tower . The other two cornerstones were the Hanover Zoo and the forest restaurant tax thief . However, a description of the race names the tax thief as the starting point and the Lister Tower as the first hairpin.
