Karl Hofmann (* 1927 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1978 ) was a German motorcycle racer .

Career

Karl Hofmann retired in 1951 with his Puch in the lead on the Feldbergring. He was more successful on other racetracks, e.g. B. on the Nürburgring . There he won in 1951 on a 125-cm³ Puch, in 1953 on a 250-cm³ DKW and in 1954 on a 350-cm³ DKW (ahead of his brand colleagues August Hobl and Gerhard Bodmer ). At the Sachsenring he won twice, in 1951 on a 125 cm³ Puch and in 1956 on a 125 cm³ DKW. In 1953, Karl Hofmann won the Swedish Tourist Trophy , the Eilenriederennen in Hanover and the Schauinsland hill climb near Freiburg on the 350 DKW .

1956 was Karl Hofmann at work -DKW Second cc in the classes to 125 and 350 respectively of the German road championship behind August Hobl and above Erhart Krumpholz on IFA and Hans Bartl on DKW. It is worth mentioning his 350 victory in Nuremberg at the Norisring ahead of Hobl. In the same year he was World Championship eighth in the eight-liter class on a DKW and World Cup tenth on a DKW in the 350 cm³ category.

He had already driven his first race in 1948, got his driver's license in 1950, and won the title of 'Best German Private Driver' in the 125cc class in 1950 and 1951. From 1952 he was a DKW works driver.

Karl Hofmann had a namesake who often competed in the same races. This sometimes led to mix-ups in the results lists. Wilhelm Hofmann was not related to Karl, but also had some notable successes as an NSU factory driver.

Karl Hofmann died in 1978.
