The Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo is a permanent motorsport racetrack in Argentina , which was opened in 2008 and has also been used by international championships since 2013.
Origin and location
Construction of the Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo began in 2007. The 4.376 kilometer stretch, opened in 2008, is located west of the small town of Termas de Río Hondo in the northern Argentine province of Santiago del Estero .
As a result of the reconstruction of the route planned by Jarno Zaffelli, the length increased to 4.805 kilometers and the number of corners to 14 in 2013; five to the left and nine to the right. The biggest change in the route was an 'infield' after the first corner and a narrowing of the former turn 6 (then turn 8). In addition, the safety conditions have been significantly improved through expanded run-off zones with gravel beds and asphalt surfaces. On July 17, 2013, the course was given a rating of 2 by the FIA , which allows all events except Formula 1 .
history
The national Argentine racing championships have been a regular guest on the track since 2008. The first international racing events were the races of the World Touring Car Championship in 2013 - on the first weekend in August; shortly after the classification by the FIA. Races in Argentina (but not in Termas de Río Hondo) were announced in 2011 and 2012, but they were not held. In 2013 , the future world champion Yvan Muller and the local hero José María López won the races. The Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo is also on the World Touring Car Championship calendar in 2014 .
In the 2013 season , the course should be on the calendar of the motorcycle world championship for the first time and host the Grand Prix of Argentina , but political entanglements prevented this. In 2014 the third race of the season was held in Termas de Río Hondo.
