The Circuito de Vila Real is a temporary motorsport racing track in the Portuguese city of Vila Real .

history

Motorsport has a long tradition in Vila Real. Between 1931 and 1991, with a few short interruptions, the city race, which is also well known beyond the national borders, was held. The heyday was in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, when prestigious international competitions were also held. For example, between 1982 and 1990 , Formula TT races were held a total of seven times .

The city race was launched in 1931 by a number of motor sports enthusiasts. Characteristic streets of the city center were combined into a course, which at the beginning had a total length of 7150 m and was only changed in a few places until 1991. That year, however, a driver fell off the piste, killing four people and seriously injuring a number of people. As a consequence, Vila Real was deleted from the racing calendar.

It was not until 2007 that a race was held on a new and appropriately secured track that skipped the scene of the accident. This race is repeated every summer and is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction.

Meanwhile, Vila Real has regularly hosted various international and national races again. The eighth of the twelve races of the 2015 World Touring Car Championship took place here.
