The Losail International Circuit is a motorsport - racing circuit outside of Doha in Qatar .

Location and construction

The route is located on the east coast of the country, 20 kilometers north of Doha, in the middle of the desert and is 5380 meters long. It was opened in 2004 and cost the equivalent of around 50 million euros . The racetrack is homologated by both the FIA and the FIM and is considered very modern, its equipment includes 40 pit garages, a modern press center with 200 journalist spaces and a track hospital. Outside of the racing events, the slope can also be rented by private individuals.

Events

Since 2004, the Qatar Grand Prix for the Motorcycle World Championship and a Superbike World Championship run have been held here every year. The audience response to the races is rather low, so the route to the motorcycle world championship races regularly has fewer than 10,000 visitors on the race weekend.

At the start of the 2008 motorcycle world championship , the first night race in the history of the motorcycle world championship took place here on March 9th. The 2009 Grand Prix was characterized by bad weather conditions. Since the artificial lighting of the route creates dangerous light reflections when the slope conditions are wet , the runs in the rain were excluded from the outset. The race in the 125 cc class had to be stopped after four laps due to the onset of rain and was not restarted. The 250 cm³ run was shortened from 20 to 13 laps, while the MotoGP class race planned for midnight (local time) could not even be started due to heavy rain and storms and was postponed by one day to the following Monday.
