Michaël Paquay (born February 27, 1972 in Saint-Hubert , Wallonia , Belgium ; † May 9, 1998 in Monza , Lombardy , Italy ) was a Belgian motorcycle racer .

biography

Michaël Paquay, nicknamed "Mika", took part in many national and international motorcycle races, in 1991 he finished second in the Belgian 125 cc Sports Production Championship. In 1993 he won on a Honda Team Honda Belgium the Supersport championship . In 1995 Paquay was able to repeat this success on a Ducati , this time the Belgian won seven of the eight races held. From 1997 Michel Paquay was on the road for the Castrol Honda factory team on a Honda CBR 600 in the Supersport World Series . In the first year he reached the sixth championship rank.

On May 9, 1998 Michaël Paquay had a serious accident on the high-speed track in Monza, Italy, while training for the World Supersport Series. Several drivers were involved in the accident that occurred in the morning when approaching the first chicane. Paquay was trying to overtake Honda rider Antonio Calasso when he collided with him and fell to the ground. The Belgian was overwhelmed by the immediately following Sébastien Charpentier and Ferdinando Di Maso . Michaël Paquay died the same evening in the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza from his severe head and chest injuries.
