License plates in Luxembourg usually have black lettering on a yellow background. The license plates are tied to the vehicle for which they were issued. When sold, the license plate usually remains on the vehicle.

However, if the owner wants a special license plate ( desired license plate ), the license plate is no longer linked to the vehicle, but assigned to the owner in return for a fee. The owner of such a custom license plate keeps it for life, even when changing vehicle.

According to the grand ducal regulations of June 17, 2003, currently issued license plates are always six characters long (two letters followed by four digits), whereby the digit sequence can also begin with zeros (e.g. XY 0008). On the left edge they show a blue field with the nationality symbol L and the European stars.

The letter sequence CD (followed by two digits, a hyphen and two further digits) is reserved for vehicles in the diplomatic service .

Authority registration number - e.g. B. the police - start with AA followed by four digits.

The letters I and O are not given.

Old license plates were issued in the following formats and are still in circulation today:

  • two letters and three digits (MK 286)
  • one letter and four digits (P 1234)
  • five digits (12345)
  • four digits (1234)
  • three digits (987)

Between 1988 and 2003 the rear plates also showed the European flag .

Special marks are reserved for the grand ducal court (e.g. CB for “ Château de Berg” with a four-digit number on a yellow background). For special occasions there are two-tone labels (top half blue, bottom orange), the house colors of the grand ducal family. They often consist of one or two digits. Still other marks consist only of two digits on a yellow background, in the left area the grand ducal coat of arms is shown instead of the country code.

If a deregistered vehicle with an existing license plate is to be registered again, a new license plate will still be assigned if the existing one does not have six characters and was not assigned as a desired license plate.

There are still a lot of old license plates with two letters and three digits (e.g. XY 123), but these are noticeably disappearing because a change of license plate to the new format is mandatory when purchasing a new vehicle or changing the registration of the vehicle.

Even older license plates (white on black)

Even older license plates have white letters on a black background. Military vehicles and official cars of higher officers have similar license plates. Here, however, the emblem of the Luxembourg army is located to the left of the code number .

In the Grand Duchy, the issuing of license plates is the responsibility of the SNCA (Société nationale de circulation automobile).
