Régis Laconi (born July 8, 1975 in Saint-Dizier , Haute-Marne ) is a former French motorcycle racer .

Régis Laconi is the son of an Italian father and a French mother. It was 1994 European Champion in the 250 cc class and started a long time in the Superbike World Championship , among others, the Ducati - factory team .

Career

Beginnings

Régis Laconi began his career in 1991 in the French 125 cc championship. The following year he was able to win the title in the 250cc class. In 1994 Laconi was European champion in the 250 cc class.

Motorcycle world championship

Laconi completed his first Grand Prix in the motorcycle world championship back in 1992 as a wildcard pilot at the race in France in the 125 cc class. In the 1995 and 1996 seasons he competed permanently in the 250 cc class on a Honda , without achieving presentable results.

In 1997 Laconi switched to the 500 cc World Championship, where he drove a V2 Honda in the Tecmas Honda ELF team . Due to an injury, he only took part in 11 of the 15 races, in the overall standings he finished 14th with 52 points. Between 1998 and 2000 , Régis Laconi rode a Yamaha for Peter Clifford's Red Bull Yamaha WCM team . At the Grand Prix of Valencia in 1999 he celebrated the only previous win of his career in the Motorcycle World Championship. During these years he finished tenth, eleven and twelve in the World Cup rankings.

In the 2002 season , the Frenchman had his last season in the motorcycle world championship. He drove in the newly created MotoGP class in the Aprilia factory team an Aprilia RS³ - four-strokes . With two eighth places as the best results, he finished 19th in the World Championship with 33 points.

Superbike World Championship

In the 2001 season Laconi made his first foray into the Superbike World Championship, where he piloted an Aprilia RSV 1000 factory machine. He finished eleventh in the World Cup with 152 points. Despite a race win in Imola , he could not keep up with the performances of teammate Troy Corser .

For the 2003 season , Régis Laconi returned to the Superbike World Championship and rode in the Ducati customer team Caracchi NCR Nortel Networks . With five podium positions, 267 points and fourth place in the overall standings, he recommended himself for a place on the factory machine next year.

In 2004 and 2005 he formed the Ducati factory team together with the British James Toseland . In the first year the Ducati 999 were superior, the World Championship was only decided in favor of Toseland in the last race in Magny-Cours between the two. Laconi gambled away the title, especially in the first half of the season, due to a few falls. In the second season, the Japanese four-cylinder Suzuki and Honda caught up. The Frenchman fell several times and was so badly injured that he could not take part in several races and was replaced by the Italian Lorenzo Lanzi . In the World Cup, he was only sixth and his contract was not renewed. Overall, Régis Laconi achieved ten wins, 22 podiums and six pole positions in 38 races as a Ducati works driver in the two years .

For the 2006 season Laconi moved to Kawasaki in the PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse team . With 103 points he reached 15th place in the overall World Cup. In 2007 Laconi also competed for Kawasaki in the Superbike World Championship. After numerous racing crashes at the start of the season, he only fought for midfield positions throughout the season. The French didn't manage to get a single podium finish, with 137 points he was tenth in the World Cup. 2008 was no more successful for Régis Laconi than the two previous years, the Kawasaki ZX-10R was still inferior to the factory machines of the competition, which is why the Frenchman himself had to fight hard for a place in the top ten. Laconi finished 16th in the World Championship with 61 points, putting his Japanese team-mate Makoto Tamada , after all, two-time Grand Prix winner, in the shade.

For the 2009 season, Régis Laconi moved to the Italian private team DFX Corse , where he drove a Ducati 1098R . At the first event of the season in Phillip Island , Australia , the bald Frenchman showed a clear upward trend with ranks seven and five. The Frenchman qualified for second place on the grid in Valencia and finished both races in fourth place.

On May 15, 2009, Laconi fell badly during the first training session for the South Africa run in Kyalami and hit his head hard on the ground. The Frenchman broke his third and fifth cervical vertebrae and suffered a bruised lung and severe bruises. However, he was able to move his limbs after the fall and suffered no neurological damage. Régis Laconi was flown to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg and initially did not have an operation. On May 19, 2009, he was successfully operated on in Johannesburg. Régis Laconi was supposed to stay in South Africa until the end of May, after which he was taken to a special clinic in Paris . According to doctors, the Frenchman will not suffer any permanent damage. Laconi has been recovering at home in Aix-en-Provence since June 5th and has already resumed light swimming and motorcycle training.
