In his career, Sandford was able to become motorcycle world champion twice and win the Tourist Trophy twice .

Career

Cecil Sandford began his career in grass track racing in his home country, England .

For the 1950 season , he was offered a place on the works team of the English motorcycle manufacturer AJS , alongside the reigning 500 cc world champion Leslie Graham . Sandford made his debut with a fifth place at the Ulster Grand Prix in the 350cc class in the motorcycle world championship . In 1951 he started on Velocette in the classes up to 250 and 350 cm³.

For the 1952 season, Cecil Sandford, like Leslie Graham, moved to the team of the Italian manufacturer MV Agusta , for which he competed in the 125 cc class. Sandford won three of the six races held and achieved two third places. He was superior to the Italian Carlo Ubbiali world champion and brought MV Agusta the first of 38 drivers' championship titles to date.

In 1953 , Sandford failed to defend his world title. Behind the German Werner Haas on NSU he was runner-up in the 125cc class.

After an eighth place in 1954 in the 125cc World Championship, Cecil Sandford moved to Moto Guzzi for the 1955 season , for which he came third in the 250cc and fifth in the 350cc world championship. In 1956 he started on FB Mondial and in the DKW factory team alongside August Hobl , Karl Hofmann and Hans Bartl .

In the 1957 season , Cecil Sandford was able to win his second world title. He won the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man and the Ulster Grand Prix in Northern Ireland and won the 250 cc title ahead of his FB Mondial brand colleague Tarquinio Provini . Because of the rising costs, at the end of the 1957 season, FB-Mondial and a few other Italian manufacturers withdrew from the world championship, so Cecil Sandford decided to end his career at the end of the season.
