"Rocket" Ron Haslam (born June 22, 1957 in Langley Mill , Nottinghamshire , England ) is a retired British motorcycle racer who has won three world championships and four British championships and has contested a total of 106 grands prix in the motorcycle world championship .

Ron Haslam is the father of Leon Haslam , who is currently competing in the Superbike World Championship . Because of his often very good starts , he was nicknamed Rocket Ron .

Career

Haslam began his career in 1972 at the age of 15 years on the 750- cc - Norton Commando of his brothers Phil and Terry. In his first two races at Cadwell Park , he finished seventh and eighth. In 1978 he drove races in the classes 125 cm³, 250 cm³, 500 cm³, 1000 cm³, Superbike and TT-F1 . In the following year also in the 350 cm³ class. In Oulton Park and 1979 in Carnaby he won races in five different classes on one day each.

Haslam drove many endurance races . His greatest success in this racing series was a second place in the Suzuka 8-hour race in 1979 .

Ron Haslam contested his first race in the motorcycle world championship in 1977 on a 500 cc Suzuki at Silverstone . In 1982 three more Grands Prix followed on the two-stroke Honda NR500 with places twelve, eleven and fifteen, as well as a victory in the Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur on a two-stroke Honda, which is not part of the world championship . For the 1983 season , Haslam received a Honda factory contract on the side of Freddie Spencer . The Briton stayed in the 500cc World Championship until the end of the 1990 season . He achieved 61 top ten placements, including nine podiums. His biggest achievement was a second place behind Randy Mamola in Assen 1985 . In the 1987 season he achieved his best championship result with fourth place behind Wayne Gardner , Randy Mamola and Eddie Lawson .

Today Ron Haslam supports his son Leon in his racing career and runs a racing driver school in Donington Park .
