Steven "Steve Hizzy" Hislop (born January 11, 1962 in Hawick , Scotland , † July 30, 2003 in Teviothead , Roxburghshire , Scotland) was a British motorcycle racer and was considered one of the fastest drivers in the road races that were very popular in his home country.

Career

On the Isle of Man, Hislop became the first driver to break the magic barrier of 120 mph average speed in 1989 . Between 1989 and 1994 he won the Tourist Trophy eleven times. He proved his driving superiority in 1992 when he defeated Carl Fogarty on the factory Yamaha with his inferior Norton NRS 588 with Wankel engine . In the 1990 season, Hislop won the British 250cc Championship, in 1995 and 2002 he was British Superbike Champion .

Deadly accident

Steve Hislop was piloting a Robinson R44 helicopter ( aircraft registration number: G-OUEL) alone on July 30, 2003 from Hawick to Manchester to the Barton Aerodrome ( ICAO code : EGCB) under visual flight rules when it came into thick clouds. When trying to fly the helicopter out of the clouds, the main rotor blades hit the tail boom and destroyed it. The helicopter crashed and burned out. Steve Hislop was killed in the crash.
