The Air Accidents Investigation Branch ( AAIB , German Flugunfalluntersuchungsabteilung ) is a transport authority in the United Kingdom that investigates aircraft accidents and belongs to the division of the English Department for Transport . history
The agency's history dates back to 1915 when it was established under the name Accidents Investigation Branch (AIB) of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). In 1987 the organization got its current name after being assigned to other authorities several times.

The AAIB's staff consists of a staff of 53 under the direction of the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents and his deputy Deputy Chief Inspector of Air Accidents . Investigations are carried out by one of the five groups. The latter are each under the direction of a Principal Inspector .
