The Farnborough Airport is one for the business aviation unused airfield about 55 km south west of London in the county of Hampshire in southern England.

history

The airfield was established by the United Kingdom Department of Defense (MOD) in 1908. The area was used as a military base by the Royal Aircraft Establishment . The aviation pioneer Samuel Franklin Cody completed the first motorized flight in Great Britain there on October 16, 1908.

The first civil flights took place from 1989, the Luxembourg Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG) took over the operation of the airfield in 1997. In 2003, the airfield was leased to TAG by the Civil Aviation Authority for 99 years . The airfield is only used by business aircraft with a maximum permitted cargo of 100 kg. Local affairs are the responsibility of Rushmoor County .

The Secretary of State granted permission for up to 50,000 aircraft movements per year in February 2011. The operator wants to achieve this number by 2019.

Facilities

In addition to the British Department of Transportation Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is also a flight simulator center of the Flight Safety resident. The new passenger terminal built by TAG opened in 2006 in the presence of Prince Andrew, Duke of York .

Farnborough International Airshow

Every two years , the Farnborough International Airshow , organized by the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), takes place on the site .

Incidents

  • On August 19, 1952, a Vickers Valetta C.1 of the Royal Air Force ( aircraft registration number VL266 ) broke on a test flight eight miles west of Farnborough airfield and crashed near Hook, Hampshire. First the fin released , then the left wing, followed by the right. The two pilots were killed.

Trivia

The filming of the film James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace took place at the airport in 2008 . In the film, the scene is portrayed as a fictional Austrian Bregenz airport .
