Niccolò Canepa (born May 14, 1988 in Genoa , Italy ) is an Italian motorcycle racer .

In the 2007 season he won on the Ducati 1098 S the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup . In 2010 the Italian will compete for the Scot team in the Moto2 class of the motorcycle world championship .

Career

Beginnings

Niccolò Canepa's career began in 1999 when he took part in a mini-moto championship. In 2000 he finished fourth in the Italian Minimoto series. In 2002 Canepa switched to the four-stroke engine and competed in the Italian Superstock 600 championship and the Trofeo Yamaha R6 Max . As the youngest rider in the history of the Italian motorcycle championship, he was able to attract attention for the first time. After two years in the 600 cc championships, Niccolò Canepa rose to the Italian Superstock 1000 championship in 2004, where he again showed good results.

In 2005, the Genoese competed regularly in the Superstock 600 European Championship, which he finished fourth at the age of only 17. In addition, he also started in some races of the Supersport World Championship . In 2006 Canepa finished second in the Superstock 600 European Championship, although he was unable to take part in the last two races due to injury.

FIM Superstock 1000 Cup

Niccolò Canepa competed in the 2007 season for the Ducati Xerox Junior Team in a Ducati 1098 S in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup , which he was able to win immediately. The title decision was not made until the last lap of the last run in Magny-Cours , when MV Agusta driver Ayrton Badovini overtook Claudio Corti , who had been in the lead up to then , and helped Canepa win the title. After the end of the season, Canepa took part in MotoGP test drives in Jerez and made another exclamation mark there. On the MotoGP Ducati, which is completely unknown to him, he clearly distanced the regular test drivers Vittoriano Guareschi and Shin'ichi Itō on all three test days and was not even 0.4 seconds slower than regular driver Marco Melandri on his fastest lap .

Test driver at Ducati

Because of his strong performances, Ducati decided to equip Canepa for 2008 with a contract as a test driver for both the MotoGP project and the 1098 R Superbike World Championship machine . Furthermore, three wildcard appearances in the Superbike World Championship and possibly one in the MotoGP class were planned for him. In July 2008, he set the fastest time on both days of the MotoGP test in Indianapolis, USA . A short time later, in superbike tests in Vallelunga, he set lap times similar to those of his team-mate, the two-time world champion Troy Bayliss . Canepa was always faster than Ducati works rider Michel Fabrizio and is therefore traded as a possible successor to Bayliss in the Superbike World Championship works team of the Italian manufacturer for 2009 . At the beginning of September 2008, the Genoese had a serious fall during Superbike tests in Mugello and fractured a collarbone and a thumb , which is why he had to do without a start at the Superbike World Championship run in Vallelunga.

MotoGP class

In the 2009 season Niccolò Canepa was a regular rider in the Pramac team in the MotoGP class of the motorcycle world championship , where he competed in a Ducati Desmosedici GP9 . His team mate was the Finn Mika Kallio , who rose from the 250 cc class to the premier class. In the first four races of the season, the Italian only finished in the lower ranks. At his home race, the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello , Canepa finished ninth in the top ten for the first time in the rain. After four more inconspicuous races, the Genovese finished eighth in the also rainy Great Britain Grand Prix in Donington Park , which was his best result of the season. At the Indianapolis Grand Prix , Niccolò Canepa got a new teammate in Aleix Espargaró , as Mika Kallio replaced the sick Casey Stoner in the Ducati factory team . The Spaniard showed strong performances from the start, which quickly led to speculation that Espargaró Canepa could replace Canepa as a regular driver in the Pramac team during the course of the season , as they were not entirely satisfied with him. However, these rumors did not come true. On October 16, 2009, Niccolò Canepa fell in training for the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island at over 200 km / h on a highsider and injured his right arm, which made skin grafts necessary and forced him to pause for two races . Before the last race of the season in Valencia , Canepa failed a scheduled medical check and was also banned from starting these races. With 36 points, the Italian finished the season in 16th place overall.

On October 6, 2009, three races before the end of the season and before his fall in Australia, it became official that Niccolò Canepa would have to give up his place in the Pramac team in 2010 to Aleix Espargaró.

Moto2 class

On November 19th, 2009 Niccolò Canepa announced his move to the Scot team in the newly created Moto2 class, where he will compete with Alex De Angelis from San Marino . At Scot , the Japanese Hiroshi Aoyama became the last 250 cc world champion in World Cup history in 2009.
