In the 2010 season he competed for the Ducati factory team in the Superbike World Championship . Fabrizio, based on his year of birth, prefers to start with starting number 84. He is called The Wizard by his fans .

Since Michel Fabrizio's father is a huge Juventus fan , he named his son after his favorite footballer , Frenchman Michel Platini , who played for Juventus in the 1980s and was one of the best footballers in the world at the time.

Career

Beginnings

Michel Fabrizio grew up in Rome . At the age of six he started to compete in mini moto races and subsequently won several titles in this category. In 2001 he won the Aprilia Challenge .

125 cc World Championship

In the 2002 season, Michel Fabrizio made his debut on a Gilera in the Team Italia in the 125- cc class of the Motorcycle World Championship . However, he could not achieve the desired results and only came into the points twice, his best result was 13th place at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi . With four points, he was only 31st overall.

Superstock EM

In 2003, Michel Fabrizio moved to the Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra team of Belgian Francis Batta , where he drove a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 in the Superstock 1000 class , which was part of the European motorcycle championship . Fabrizio was able to win the championship straight away after an exciting fight with his compatriot Lorenzo Lanzi .

MotoGP class

For the 2004 season, Michel Fabrizio was originally supposed to contest the Superbike World Championship for Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra . Due to the change in the technical regulations, however, Suzuki decided not to start this season. Michel Fabrizio lost his position shortly before the start of the season and had to look for another employer. He finally got an offer from Team WCM for the MotoGP class of the motorcycle world championship, which he accepted. The team suffered from a chronic lack of funds and did not start with pure prototypes as prescribed , but instead used modified Yamaha YZF R1 engines that had been converted to the MotoGP regulations, as well as with inferior Dunlop tires. The motorcycle was hopelessly inferior to the competition from the big Japanese and Italian factories and Fabrizio was therefore regularly at the bottom of the results lists. At the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez , however, he was able to show all his skills in the rain. Fabrizio finished in tenth place, beating drivers like Loris Capirossi , Makoto Tamada and Shin'ya Nakano , for example . This result gave him the chance to replace injured regular driver Shane Byrne at Aprilia at the Portuguese Grand Prix . Michel Fabrizio was unable to finish this race, but made a positive impression on Aprilia.

In September 2006 he returned to the MotoGP class and was supposed to replace the injured Toni Elías at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Fausto Gresini's Honda team . However, this great opportunity turned into a great disappointment for Fabrizio. He fell during free practice, broke his right collarbone and was unable to start the race.

He also replaced Toni Elías, who was injured again at Honda Gresini, at the 2007 German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring . Fabrizio put in a strong performance and finished tenth in the extremely hot race.

Supersport World Cup

After his engagement with Aprilia in the MotoGP class, Michel Fabrizio did not return to the WCM team. Instead, he was signed up for the last races of the 2004 Supersport World Championship by Honda , who had now become aware of him . The contract also stipulated that Fabrizio should start in this class for 2005. He drove a Honda CBR 600 RR for the Italian Megabike team and was able to take two second and three third places in 2005 and finish sixth in the Supersport class overall.

Superbike World Championship

In the 2006 season , Michel Fabrizio was promoted to the Superbike World Championship and competed on a Honda CBR 1000 RR of the Italian DFX treme team. His team mate was the veteran Pierfrancesco Chili , who ended his active career after the season and was able to benefit from his great experience Fabrizio. His best results of the season were a second and a third place in Brno in the Czech Republic , as well as a third place in the first run in Assen . Fabrizio finished the world championship in eleventh place with 125 points, making it the third-best Honda driver.

Also in 2007 Michel Fabrizio competed for DFX treme on a Honda in the Superbike World Championship. His teammate was Australian Steve Martin . Pierfrancesco Chili meanwhile worked as a team manager for the racing team. Fabrizio managed to get into the top ten on a regular basis, his best result of the season was third place in the second run in Brno. With 132 points, he finally finished eleventh overall.

For the 2008 season, Michel Fabrizio switched to the Ducati factory team and started alongside two-time Superbike World Champion Troy Bayliss on the new 1200 cc Ducati 1098 F08 . In his third race as a works driver, the Italian achieved his first podium finish with third place in the first race in Phillip Island, Australia . In total, Fabrizio achieved seven podium finishes in 2008, but no victory. In the overall standings, he finished eighth with 223 points.

In the 2009 season , Michel Fabrizio will continue to compete for the Ducati factory team. His new teammate is the Japanese Noriyuki Haga , who took the place of Troy Bayliss, who has retired as world champion. Even before the start of the season, the Italian caused a sensation with best times in test drives in Kyalami, South Africa . Fabrizio started the season with fourth and fifth in Australia, followed by a double retirement in Losail ( Qatar ). On May 10, 2009, the Italian celebrated his first race victory in the Superbike World Championship on the high-speed track in Monza . He prevailed in the first race of the day in an exciting fight against his team mate Haga after the American Ben Spies , who was still leading before the last corner, had to retire due to a lack of fuel. In the second race Fabrizio was second behind Spies.

On August 16, Michel Fabrizio replaced the Finn Mika Kallio in the Pramac-Ducati team at the 2009 Czech Grand Prix . This in turn represented the Australian Casey Stoner on the Ducati factory team , who did not compete due to illness. Fabrizio had to give up the race after just a few laps due to an injury.

Fabrizio has already been confirmed in the Ducati factory team for 2010 , his team mate will continue to be Noriyuki Haga.
