List of cities in Russia

Lyswa ( Russian Лы́сьва ) is a city of 65,918 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia in the Perm region . It is located around 200 km east of the regional capital Perm , on the Lyswa River (river system of the Volga ).

history

The river and thus the city name Lyswa comes from the Komi words Lys (spruce branch) and Wa (water). Thus, the first human settlements existed in the area around today's city long before it was founded. This only took place in 1785 with the construction of an iron foundry on the Lyswa bank. After the foundry started operations two years later, the place quickly developed into a workers' settlement. In the 19th century there were hospitals, shops and other public facilities there.

In 1902 the importance of the iron foundry increased with the laying of a railway line through Lyswa. However, after the October Revolution of 1917, the factory was nationalized and severely damaged during the civil war that followed . A few years later, production could be resumed. Lyswa received city status in 1926, and during the Great Patriotic War the factory mainly produced ammunition for the Soviet army.

In the post-war period, further industrial companies were established in Lyswa. The city itself was rebuilt and expanded to include some surrounding settlements.
