geography
Kudymkar is located at the mouth of the Kuwa River in the Inwa tributary of the Kama River in the southern part of the Perm region, about 200 km northwest of the capital Perm . The closest town is Cermos , about 90 km east of Kudymkar.
history
Kudymkar was founded no later than in the 16th century, the first written mention of the village dates back to 1579. Its name, originally Kudym-Kar , comes from the Komi , and Kar means something like "City", while with Kudym to could act a proper name. The Perm area had belonged to the Grand Duchy of Moscow since 1472, and Russians had settled there since the end of the 16th century. Until the 20th century, however, Kudymkar remained a rather insignificant village with no more than 1,000 inhabitants.
With a territorial reform in 1925, the Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug was formed within the Russian SFSR and Kudymkar was declared its center. This favored the population growth there, so that the place received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1933 and city rights five years later. The first industrial companies were also established in Kudymkar in the 1930s.
