Wereschtschagino ( Russian Верещагино , scientific transliteration Vereščagino ) is a Russian city with 22,156 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Perm region . It is located in the foothills of the Urals , 137 km west of the regional capital Perm . The closest cities are Otschor (20 km south of Vereschtschagino) and Nytwa (42 km east).
history
Vereschtschagino was founded in 1898 when the Vyatka – Perm railway line , a section of the Trans-Siberian Railway , was built. Until 1904 the settlement was called Ochorskaya (Очёрская) after the river Ochor , from 1904 to 1915 Voznesenskaya (Вознесенская). It was then renamed in honor of the war painter Vasily Vereshchagin , who made a stop here in 1904 on the way to the scenes of the Russo-Japanese War .
In 1942 Vereschchagino was granted city rights.

Economically, the city lives from the food industry (dairy products, bread), the textile industry and mechanical engineering, especially a reinforced concrete plant. The area is dominated by agriculture. a. Peat and marl mined.
