Economy and development
The potash salt deposits around Berezniki and Solikamsk , 20 kilometers to the north, are also of major importance in the industry in Berezniki. The Uralkali company is based in Berezniki.
There are also gas and oil wells in the vicinity. In addition to the serious ecological problems with which the city is struggling, there is the problem of the undercutting of the city area by mining. Parts of the city are affected by subsidence . To make matters worse, there was an accident in October 2006 in the BKRU-1 mine, which extends under the urban development. As a result of this disaster, the mine systems have been flooded since then, which means the danger of so-called day breaks for large areas of the city . Due to a lowering in the station area, the railway line coming from Solikamsk was closed in 2010.
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the population has decreased by about 60,000, as the location and conditions for successful development in Berezniki and Solikamsk are extremely unfavorable. The railway coming from Perm ends in Solikamsk. Even the paved roads only lead south. The Kama is only navigable from Solikamsk. This means that the two cities have enormous potential in natural resources, but do not have good transport links. In 2011, the German architecture firm KK Architekten, headed by Christoph Kohl and in cooperation with Buro Happold, won an international competition for the development of the Beresniki-Solikamsk-Usolye region. Your master plan should lead to a revitalization of the region, taking into account the geological risks.
