history

The place was founded in the second half of the 19th century in place of thermal springs on the river of the same name, which the local population had known since the 18th century. The place name is also associated with the sources (Russian бе́лое куре́ние / beloje kurenije for white smoking ), referring to the steam development in the cold season. In 1867 the first 17 tubs were installed for healing purposes; this year is the founding year of the place. In 1892, Biysk merchants built hotels and a bathhouse, which was expanded in 1916.

From 1928 Belokuricha was expanded into a health resort on a larger scale . During the Second World War , Artek , the central pioneer camp of the Soviet pioneer organization , was evacuated from the Crimea to Belokuricha in 1942.

In 1958 the status of an urban-type settlement was given, and in 1982 city rights.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main economic factor is the function of the place as one of the most important balneological and climatic health resorts in Siberia. Based on the weakly mineralized, radon-containing healing waters pumped from a depth of 200 to 500 meters with temperatures of 27 ° C to 42 ° C, 19 sanatoriums with a total of 5,000 beds function. Another healing factor is the relatively mild and sunny climate for Siberia.

Efforts are being made to establish the place as a ski center with its safe snow depths of over one meter and normal winter temperatures between −10 ° C and −25 ° C.

There are bus connections to Belokuricha, including from Barnaul and via the regional road R368 from Biysk, about 60 kilometers away, where the nearest train station is also located.
